Caritas ambassadors implement Catholic social teaching in their own way

Love of neighbor, respect for human dignity, justice and trustworthiness are important values for Christians. They are the foundation of the social teaching of the Catholic Church, which also underpins Caritas’ identity.

Four of the ten principles of Catholic social teaching are particularly central:

  • Human dignity is the foundation of identity. It recognises the unique value of every person and their right to be treated with respect.
  • The common good and the principle of subsidiarity act as pillars. The common good emphasises promoting the well-being of all people. The principle of subsidiarity highlights that the needs of communities and families are primary in relation to larger structures.
  • Solidarity forms the pinnacle, or roof, of identity. It means responsibility for the well-being of others and a commitment to helping those in need.

Caritas’ mission is to meet those in vulnerable situations individually, to make their human dignity visible and to promote equality. In Finland, Caritas supports single people, families and immigrants. It organises food distributions, friend café activities and guidance and counselling services, among other things. Volunteers participate in a wide range of relief work. The YoungCaritas group offers young adults the opportunity to work for the community by participating in various projects.
