Poverty continues to increase. Caritas Finland is receiving more and more requests for help. Especially before the summer holidays and Christmas, many low-income families seek support from both Catholic parishes and Caritas.

The difficult economic situation hits children and youth the hardest. Without support, they miss out on summer camp experiences, community, and joy. Even paying for the summer camp fees or travel expenses is difficult. During  Christmas time, many families are already struggling with basic rations: they cannot afford to buy Christmas food or gifts. Caritas and parishes are not able to help everyone who asks for help, even though the need is great.

Caritas Finland is the only Catholic aid and development cooperation organisation in Finland and works exactly where help is needed most. We support families of children and youth with summer camp fees, so that everyone can participate and belong. We also support summer camp activities for Ukrainians living in Finland. Before Christmas, we deliver food gift cards to parishes, which the parish priests can distribute directly to needy parishioners. They are available to single people and families, including seniors. With the help of donations, we also offer social counselling, trips, and recreational activities – moments that bring hope and relief to everyday life.

Donating is especially important right now. During Lent, we are called upon to look after our neighbours and contribute positively. A donation of as little as 20 euros will enable the purchase of one food gift card. Together, donations make it possible for children and the youth to go to summer camp, families to have food on the table, and the needy to participate in community activities.

Poverty is not a choice – but love of your neighbour is.
