Myanmar

There is a huge humanitarian crisis going on in Myanmar, which started with the 2021 military coup. The crisis affects children and young people in particular. A large number of children cannot go to school at all, because there are no resources. The military government administers the education system and does not provide comprehensive or high-quality education. Parents do not dare or want to send their children to school, because young people are forcibly recruited into the army or the education is of poor quality. Prolonged disruptions in schooling are a serious threat to children’s well-being and future prospects.

Currently, many teachers operate outside the official system. They want to provide an alternative to military-controlled education, but they lack support, skills and learning materials. The project “Promoting comprehensive, high-quality and inclusive education in Myanmar” carried out by Caritas Finland and a local non-governmental organization meets this need. With the help of the project, teachers and educators can support children and young people so that they can get out of the cycle of violence and build a time of peace in Myanmar.

What we do

  • The main target group of the project are teachers who offer informal alternative education.
  • They receive training on teaching methods and how to teach in crisis and conflict situations, for example by remote connection.
  • Teachers are supported in their professional development and receive peer support from other teachers.

This project:

  • Reaching over 260 teachers, community and religious leaders
  • Improves the opportunities for about 9,600 children and young people to get an education in 16 schools across the country.
  • Reaches 240 parents and community members.
  • Increase the capacity of Myanmar’s civil society to support schooling in a crisis situation.

What results are we expecting?

Immediate results:

  • Teachers, educators and communities know how to promote high-quality and equal education, they get support for their activities, they cooperate and they have access to high-quality learning materials.
  • Teachers, educators and communities learn how to do their own small projects to improve children’s and young people’s access to school.
  • Non-governmental organizations are able to promote high-quality and equal education even in crisis situations.

Long-term goal:

Teachers, educators and communities in Myanmar can provide quality and equitable education that is accessible to all.
