  • You still have time to participate in the fasting collection - support Caritas' development cooperation

  • Caritas' Easter bazaar on Palm Sunday, April 2, 2023

  • Welcome to the annual meeting on April 27, 2023

  • Human trafficking is a crime against humanity – Caritas' work takes care of victims of human trafficking

Welcome to a Myanmar evening of good food and charity!

The evening's special guests are two of our local partners from Myanmar. As part of their visit, we will organize a dinner on 23.3. from 6 pm in the charming Hotel Helka, Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 23, Helsinki.

We are pleased and honored to invite you to participate in an evening related to our development cooperation project! In addition to tasty food and entertainment, the evening brings a lot of good to the world. Proceeds from the dinner will be used to promote climate justice in Myanmar.

Myanmar is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change. The devastating effects of rising temperatures, more frequent natural disasters and other challenges related to climate change are already present in the lives of Myanmar people.

Our cooperation with a local organization supports Myanmar communities in adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change. Our project focuses on providing education and resources so that people can develop sustainable livelihoods, save natural resources and build resilience in the midst of climate change.

By supporting this project, you will make a tangible impact on the lives of people in Myanmar who are on the front lines of the climate crisis. You help build a fairer and more sustainable future for everyone.

So join us and make an impact for a better world and planet. The price of the dinner ticket is 90 € and it includes a buffet and the evening's program.

There are limited places for the event, so please register soon, but no later than March 16! More information about the event and a link to register: bit.ly/Myanmarillallinen

Crime against humanity - Caritas' work prevents human trafficking

Work against human trafficking has been done for a long time. Nevertheless, there is more human trafficking and slavery in the world today than ever before. According to the UN, globally 50 million people live in modern slavery. Caritas Finland's new project in Bangladesh focuses on promoting the rights of migrant workers and preventing human trafficking. Every year more than 500,000 Bangladeshis migrate for work. Lack of knowledge about their own rights, poverty and violence against women put these migrants in a vulnerable position and at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking. In a project implemented with a local partner, migrant workers get information and tools to defend their rights and work against human trafficking and unsafe migration.

Human trafficking is a problem that permeates the entire society, the tentacles of which reach us all the way to Finland. Products made by people living in modern slavery can be found almost everywhere, and human trafficking is also a Finnish phenomenon. Caritas works both in Finland and in international networks and plays a role in preventing human trafficking. In February, Caritas Secretary General Larissa and the agency's experts met with Bishop Emeritus William Kenney and Communications Director Alexander DesForge, who are part of the international Santa Marta Group appointed by the Vatican. The network was established to prevent human trafficking and modern slavery. The meeting discussed the work of both Santa Marta and Caritas Finland and the prevention of human trafficking both in Finland and globally. Caritas also participates in the Finnish Ecumenical Council's network of organizations working against human trafficking. The work for a fairer world continues.

In brief

More than a year has passed since the war in Ukraine. At first, we collected an emergency aid collection through Caritas Internationalis. At the turn of the year, the focus of our support has shifted to longer-term helping and reconstruction. We cooperate with Caritas Austria, who are responsible for procurement and aid logistics. Thank you to everyone who has already supported Ukraine!

Caritas' Sewing Service has started

In the Caritas shop, you can order repair sewing and custom work. By repairing or fashioning an old garment, you help reduce textile waste. With the proceeds of the service, you support Caritas Finland's operations.

If you are unsure whether a piece of clothing should be repaired or fashioned, come and show it to us. The seamstress tells you what can be done and gives a price estimate for the repair. Please contact us and arrange a visit in advance: caritas@caritas.fi, subject of the message "sewing service".

In February, we said goodbye to Adriana Saarialho and thanked her for her years at Caritas' service. Adriana recently started working in another organization. As a result, the office and shop are open from Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 3 pm. Calls to the number +358 400 911 874 are still routed to the Caritas office.

A discount on monastery products for those who have paid their membership fee

By paying your membership fee, you make our aid activities possible! This year, those who have paid their membership fee will also receive a 10 percent discount on monastery products and sewing services. You can shop in the Caritas store at Kuusitie 6, Helsinki and in our online store www.caritas.fi/caritas-kauppa. For our members under the age of 25, paying the membership fee is voluntary.

The Caritas membership fee is mailed in March. We will send the membership fee forms fairly soon after receiving this letter.

Have a nice continuation of the spring to you - we hope to see you at the annual meeting and other events!

Best regards, Larissa Franz-Koivisto and the staff at the Caritas office
