Support Youth in Ivory Coast!

Côte d’Ivoire has a young population – more than half of the population is under the age of 25. Inequality is high and poverty is common. An alarmingly large number of young people are not in education or working life. Teenage pregnancies are common, especially among uneducated girls. Young people lack the skills and confidence they need to complete their studies and enter working life.

Reading is rare because either young people are not interested in reading, or they do not have books. Libraries are rare: for example, the city of Yopougon has four libraries for about two million inhabitants.

Solution

The IROKO project reduces social inequality by training and empowering the youth.

Specific objectives:

• To improve the skills of young people so that they can complete high school and university studies and enter the labour market.

• Support youth in personal development and leadership.

Activities and beneficiaries:

The project will reach 675 young people. Also 1000 young people receive information through social media.

  • 75 adolescents trained to enhance life skills. These life skills include self-knowledge, respect for oneself and others, with particular attention to women’s rights, decision-making, peaceful conflict management, listening and empathy skills, management of emotions and stress, and effective communication.
  • 400 young people trained for hard and soft skills enhancement. “Hard skills”: professional skills, such as foreign languages, computer science and introduction to accounting. “Soft skills”: teamwork, autonomy, self-confidence, adaptability, organizational skills, determination, proactivity, communication skills, problem solving and leadership.
  • 200 students benefit from access to the media library. The IROKO project will offer subscription to online libraries for 200 students in Yopougon. This will allow them to consult scientific documents and articles to support the continuation and completion of their secondary and university studies.

How to participate?

Local organisations CMV and COMIVIS are the organisers of the IROKO project. They have asked Caritas Finland to support the project with 1524 €. This amount allows them to organize free training days for young people. The training days cover various topics, such as communication, conflict management, teamwork and artificial intelligence.

With your support we can reach our goal and help young people to change their lives in Ivory Coast!
