The retreat for married couples and families fostered unity

The very first retreat for ukrainian families and married couples in Finland took place under the theme “Unity in Love and Faith”. The event was held in the picturesque location of OppiSippola, near Kotka, from May 29 to June 1, 2025. Here is a report from father Vitalii Pihii, who was organizing the event.

“These days became a special blessing — a time for prayer, silence, spiritual reflection, and sincere communication. Participants from across the country gathered to pause, spend time with God, with themselves and their loved ones, to listen more deeply to one another, and to open their hearts to the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Families prayed together, listened to spiritual talks, discussed important topics, shared their experiences of married life, raising children, overcoming difficulties, and spent time together. Meanwhile, children enjoyed a separate, engaging program with animators, full of games, creativity, joy, and laughter.

The spirit of unity and peace was enriched by shared meals, evenings around the campfire, Christian songs, and time in nature. All of this created a deep sense of community, not just as an organization, but as a true family in Christ.

We are deeply grateful to Fr. Yurii Fedorenko (Spain) for his spiritual guidance, openness, and heartfelt reflections that left a mark in every heart. We also thank Ms. Hannele Liukkonen, representative of Caritas Finland, for her support, sincerity, and active presence throughout the event.

This retreat was held with the blessing of Bishop Bohdan Dziurakh, Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainians in Germany and the Scandinavian countries, and with the support of Bishop Raimo Goyarrola, local Catholic bishop of Finland. Their encouragement was a powerful sign of unity and trust in initiatives that strengthen the life of the Church.

Our sincere thanks go to everyone who contributed to the organization — volunteers, coordinators, the hosts at OppiSippola, and all the participants who brought with them sincerity, openness, and a desire to grow together.

May this retreat be only the beginning. We trust that the Lord will continue to guide couples and families in Finland on the path of love, faith, and mutual trust.”

The retreat is one example for the work that father Vitalii is responsible for in Caritas Finland.
